The mission of the Water Resources Section of the Public Works and Water Resources Division is to provide for the efficient administration, orderly development, conservation, protection, and wise use of the State's water resources to assure a safe and abundant supply of water for domestic, industrial, agricultural and other uses which are responsive to the current and the future quality of life and economic development needs of the citizens of Louisiana.

The principle programs administered by the staff of the Water Resources Section, as mandated by R.S. 38:3091 through 3098.8 and R.S. 38:30 through 34, are as follows:

1. Water well registration program, which entails inventory of all new water wells, using Geographical Positioning System (GPS), to be stored in the State's water well data bank for use by contractors, consultants, the general public, and various local, state and federal agencies.

2. Water well construction and plugging standards, to ensure proper construction for providing the quantity of the water as designed for the needs of the owners, as well as minimizing flood damage to the wells, and  to ensure clean water for rural residents.

3. Water Well Drillers Licensing and Regulation Program.

   
   

4. Water Resources Cooperative Program with the United States Geological Survey (USGS); including ground water and surface water studies as well as flood stages and flood forecasting, etc.

5. Water Resources Data Collection and Dissemination Program.

6. Water Supply Availability, and Use Program.

Louisiana has enormous water resources and water-related concerns.   The Water Resources Section, in cooperation with other water-related agencies, is committed to the prudent use of those resources and resolution of those concerns which are essential to the maintenance and enhancement of the quality of life and economic well-being of the citizen of the State.
