Water Well Registration Data File

Welcome to the Water Resources Section of Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development's (DOTD's) Web Site for Statewide Water Well Registration Data File.

This site has been created to provide you, our clients, with a brief overview of Louisiana's Water Well Registration Program, as well as with an easy access to a comprehensive listing of registered water wells and monitor wells, within the State of Louisiana.

The purpose of DOTD's Ground Water Resource Program is to provide for the efficient administration, orderly development, protection, wise use, and management of the State's ground water resources and to ensure safe and abundant supplies of water for domestic, industrial, agricultural, and other purposes. Since 61% of the State's total population relies on ground water for their domestic needs, the protection of this valuable resource is not only essential for public health, but is vital to the future economy of our State.

DOTD, in cooperation with the Louisiana District of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), has established and maintains the State's Water Well Registration Program, which entails a Statewide inventory of all registered existing and newly-drilled water wells, monitor wells, etc. This program helps to ensure that (a) wells are properly constructed and sealed to protect against surface contaminants such as flood water, spills, etc.; (b) ensures clean water for rural residents; (c) provides a means for the State to collect, catalog, store, and disseminate water well construction and drilling data to the general public; and (d) helps the State with its water management responsibilities. Additionally, DOTD and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) prepare and distribute the publication entitled "Construction of Geotechnical Boreholes and Ground Water Monitoring Systems Handbook".

Water Well Drillers licensed by DOTD, provide the information for each well they drill by completing a Water Well Registration Form and submitting it to the Department within thirty (30) calendar days of the well's completion.

A list of Registered water wells can be generated by choosing a Parish and the Owner's Name, or by choosing a Township and Range within that Parish. The wells in each list are sorted by Owner's Name or by Section Number then by and Owner's Name. Information in each listing includes Owner's Name,DOTD Well Number, Owner's Well Number, Well Depth in feet below land surface, Well Use, Casing Size in inches, Date of Drilling, Water Level in feet below land surface, Date water level was measured, Geologic Unit (Aquifer Name) ,Well Coordinates ( i.e., Latitude and Longitude in degrees, minutes, and seconds) and Available Information Codes. What each code stands for is given at the end of each well listing. Additionally, hydrographs for various aquifers can be viewed or downloaded to see changes in water level over time.

Also a geographical representation of the Registered water well data can be found at our GIS Water Well Locator Page. Use this webpage to generate maps and extract data about the well inventory. Move your mouse over the maps and elements will change color indicating more information can be obtained by clicking. Retrieve data for circular, rectangular and trapezoidal location definitions. Satellite imagery will display as you zoom in on location areas of interest.

It should be noted that the list does not include every possible water well, which may have been drilled under a given name or within the requested sections. The list represents only those wells that have been registered with DOTD, including those scheduled by the U.S. Geological Survey, and does not include those which are presently being processed. It should also be noted that the owner's name or other well data might not be current if the well has changed ownership, use, ect. since it was first registered. Additionally, the Department cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data since they were collected from many different sources, with varying degrees of accuracy.
