Ports and Flood Control Unit
To assist in enhancing the quality of life and fostering economic growth by providing funds and guidance to insure adequate ports and harbors, reduce flood damage and provide adequate mapping by utilizing engineering, economic and other concepts (benefit-cost analysis, return on investment comparison, value engineering, and brainstorming) to select and guide development of port and flood control projects with the highest return on investment (ROI).
The purpose of the port program is to insure that adequate land side facilities are available to meet a definite market need by providing guidance and public funds to build land side infrastructure; thereby, providing jobs, and competitive transportation cost to move cargo, minimizing highway congestion, improving safety and reducing maintenance cost on our highways.
The purpose of the flood control program is to reduce flood damages by also providing guidance and public funds to build flood control infrastructure.
The purpose of the mapping program is to provide updated topographic maps to insure that appropriated planning tools are available. The mapping program consists of the National Mapping Program and the Earth Sciences Information Center.
