Project Background
Contractor:
Mead & Hunt, Inc.

Historic bridges are an important part of Louisiana's culture and transportation history.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD), in coordination with the Louisiana State Historic
Preservation Office (LASHPO) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), has commissioned a project to study
historic bridges throughout the state and develop a process to manage and preserve these valued resources. Mead & Hunt
will assist the LADOTD with the project and plans to conduct research on the history of Louisiana bridges, field
survey a select number of bridges constructed through 1970, and provide recommendations for listing in the National
Register of Historic Places and future preservation efforts. The chart below illustrates the various steps in the
project and the timeline for completion.
How Can You Stay Informed About the Project?

This is an exciting project for our state and we appreciate your interest! The project team
made four public presentations in the summer and fall of 2012 at locations throughout the state. Thanks to all who
participated and those that submitted bridge information forms! We received a lot of valuable information about
historic bridges in the state. As we move forward, there are several ways that you can stay informed about the project:

project results will be given at different locations around the state. Details will be posted to this website
and provided in email updates.
Project Updates
4/17/2013 - The project team has been hard at work over the past few months traveling around the state
to photograph and document those bridges identified for field survey. They are currently evaluating the National Register
eligibility of the bridges based on available research, field survey data, and information provided by interested
parties. National Register eligibility findings will be shared in a public presentation on May 30, 2013. Please take
note of the following if you would like to attend the presentation:
Thursday, May 30, 2013
9:00am to 10:30am

2/6/2013 - The Louisiana Historic Bridge Inventory is coming to a town near you! Field survey activities kick-off in
mid-February 2013 and will continue through April 2013. This is the next step in this exciting multi-year project.
Mead & Hunt will field review a select number of bridges to consider their potential significance for listing in the
National Register of Historic Places (National Register). Bridges previously listed or determined eligible for listing
in the National Register will not be reevaluated but will be subject to field survey and documentation with digital
images for use in subsequent phases of the project focusing on identification of preservation candidates. A listing
of bridges identified as field survey candidates is available for review and download on the project website in the
Completed Documents section. Each list is organized by parish name.
10/23/12 – Those wishing to share information about bridges in their community or parish should submit bridge forms
and any other information to the project team by December 1, 2012. The project team
is moving forward with identifying bridges for field survey. Information submitted after the deadline will still be accepted but
these bridges may not be included in the field survey pool. Thanks to everyone that has submitted bridge forms to date, we
appreciate your interest in the project!
9/10/12 – The LADOTD, FHWA, LASHPO, and other consulting parties are beginning to
discuss the development of a Programmatic Agreement (PA) for historic bridges in Louisiana. The purpose of the
PA is to outline future program planning and procedures for historic bridges. Those interested in participating
as a consulting party should contact the project team by October 12, 2012.
