Testing Procedures Manual

Volume I - Part II - Concrete

DOTD TR 201 Weight Per Cubic Foot, Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
This method is designed to determine the mass per cubic meter (per cubic foot) of freshly mixed concrete with either a slump of 25 mm (1 in.) or greater or a slump of less than 25 mm (1 in.). It gives formulas for calculating the yield (volume of concrete produced from a mixture of known quantities of the component materials), the actual cement factor, and the air content of the concrete.

DOTD TR 202
METHOD A

METHOD B

Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete
This method of test has two parts. The first part covers the procedure for determining the air content of freshly mixed concrete with a slump of 25 mm (1 in.) or greater by determining the volumetric displacement of air with water after thorough agitation. The second part covers the determination of air content of freshly mixed concrete for all ranges of slump, excluding non-plastic concrete

DOTD TR 207

Slump of Portland Cement Concrete
This test method describes the procedure to be used for determining the slump of portland cement concrete containing aggregates less than 51 mm (1.5 in.) in size.

DOTD TR 224

Proportioning and Mixing Portland Cement Concrete for Admixture Testing
Effective 2/25/19, This procedure is no longer used, refer to ASTM C494 - Standard Specification for Chemical Admixtures for Concrete
This method describes the procedure for proportioning and mixing component materials for portland cement concrete in the laboratory using accurate control of materials for admixture source approval. This method applies to each series of concrete mixes which consists of a control mix (mix containing no admixture) and a test mix (mix containing the admixture under evaluation).

DOTD TR 225

Obtaining and Testing Core Specimens from Hardened Concrete
This method outlines the procedure for obtaining, preparing, and testing concrete cores drilled from hardened concrete pavement for thickness and compressive strength determinations.

DOTD TR 226

Making, Field Curing, and Transporting Concrete Test Specimens
This procedure is to be used in making, protecting, curing, and transporting portland cement concrete compression and flexure test specimens.

DOTD TR 227

Making and Field Curing Compressive Strength Specimens for Concrete Pipe
This procedure is to be used in making, protecting, curing, and transporting portland cement concrete compression test specimens for concrete pipe. The procedure has two parts. The first part allows the addition of water to the concrete mixture to facilitate molding. The second part allows vibration and surcharging of the concrete mixture (at its existing moisture content) into the mold.

DOTD TR 229

Measuring Texture Depth of Portland Cement Concrete with Metal Tine Finish
This method describes the procedure for measuring texture depth of plastic or hardened concrete surfaces.

DOTD TR 230

Curing, Capping and Determining the Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
This method is used to cure, cap, and determine the compressive strength of molded concrete cylinders.

DOTD TR 231

Resistance of Concrete to Rapid Freezing and Thawing
Effective 10/18/18, This procedure is no longer used, refer to AASHTO 161/ASTM C666
This method covers the determination of the resistance of concrete specimens to rapidly repeated cycles of freezing and thawing in the laboratory by two different procedures: rapid freezing and thawing in water, and rapid freezing in air and thawing in water.  Both procedures are intended for use in determining the effects of variations in the properties of concrete on the resistance of the concrete to the freezing-and-thawing cycles specified in the particular procedure. Neither procedure is intended to provide a quantitative measure of the length of service that may be expected from a specific type of concrete.

DOTD TR 232

Determining In-Place Density and Consolidation Conformance for High-Density Portland Cement Concrete Overlay by Nuclear Method
Effective 10/18/18, This procedure is no longer used.

DOTD TR 233

Surface Resistivity Indication of Concrete's Ability To Resist Chloride Ion Penetration

DOTD TR 234
This test procedure is designed to determine the electrical resistivity of concrete to provide a rapid indication of its resistance to the penetration of chloride ions.
