Testing Procedures Manual

The purpose of this manual is to standardize the testing procedures used throughout the State by the various laboratories.

All testing methods shall be in accordance with the following publications unless otherwise stated in the Standard Specifications, plans, or project specifications. Precedence shall be in the order as written:

  • First - Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) Testing Procedures Manual,
  • Second - Standards published by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO),
  • Third - Standards published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

This manual is divided into two volumes and each volume is divided into parts. Volume I contains test methods pertinent to aggregates, concrete, and bituminous materials. Volume II contains test methods pertinent to soils, chemicals, miscellaneous materials, and adhesives. Each part is further arranged with the test methods for that part list in numerical order. The year of adoption or last revision of the test method is indicated by the two digits following the number of the test method.
Any further corrections, additions, or revisions will be printed and forwarded to the manual holders so that the manuals are maintained up to date. It is the responsibility of the respective manual holder to keep the Department informed as to change of address, or if he or she wishes to be taken from the mailing list. This information should be forwarded to the Materials and Testing Section at the address below.
This manual is primarily for use by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. However, manuals are available for general distribution at a nominal fee.
